Last night we went and bought 26 more hens from a farmer in Ozawkie, Kansas, which is about 100 miles north of us, and where I once had a similar home with similar acreage.
He had a wonderful set up, peacocks, goats, cattle, and of course hens, lots of hens. It was a 10 acre farm, and seemed to be a working farm, but lacking the drive to be a money making farm. It kills me to see such potential, but instead having it being used as a reason to have pets.
So, anyway, onto our new hens. Yesterday we had 19 eggs, lowest production day of the last 3 months, but today we had 42, best day in nearly 2 months. They seemed a little out of sorts when it was time to go to bed tonight, as they had clearly not been ushered by humans before and told to do so. But, they went rather easily.
This afternoon we finally made it to gather hay, 800lbs and another 6-700 to gather tomorrow. Our shed is overflowing already, but it's such great quality hay, we couldn't let it go to waste.
The pumpkins, probably 20 so far are already turning orange, so I'm hoping they still continue to grow. Canteloupes are about the size of tennis balls, and cucumbers are being gathered daily.
We also began curing a ham today, that will hit the smoker on Tuesday morning.
Tomorrow will be yet another busy day, and again very hot. We're going to do some early work and then hide inside the rest of the day.
Fourth of July is upon us, and that means I should offer another deal, so here it is.
December Harvest Hogs, 4 remaining, $467.39 including processing, however, Speciality Cuts and curing is up to an extra $85.00
Half is due on contract and invoice. This expires on July 4th at 5pm.
As always thank you for reading and supporting our family farm.
