Purpose

I often use the blog to talk about the farm, egg production, animals, produce etc. I guess, maybe I should share a bit of the highlights of working on the farm too.

We homeschool our children, not because we have little faith in the way our schools teach, but the major reason is they're just no longer safe.

Our children have a very structured schedule, wake up 630-7am, chores, then breakfast, school work, lunch, then chores, reading, play time, snack, then feedings, then a little television, bathes then bed, six days a week. Every week.

Our children don't look at the animals as pets, but each as a life with purpose. Our layers produce eggs, those eggs provide money that feeds the birds and the hogs, the hogs provide money to cover daily necessities, which provides them the things they need, not what they want.

Rose (11), Bailey(6) have learned how to til a garden, plant crop and watch them grow, they know what to look for in the leaves that show when they need water, or the soil treated. They're constantly multiplying, and dividing learning how many grams are in an ounce, or how many quarts are in a gallon. The weight of feed in cups to know how much each animal is being fed. Profit and loss, by leaving the water on too long, or feeding a favorite bird too much.

My hope is that this hands on learning, becomes a passion, and that passion becomes drive, and the drive is reflected by love for all things living, humans, animals, insects etc. Everything has a purpose, and everything wants a purpose.

Zachary (3), is terrified of insects, but we've showed him that the insects are the chickens favorite food/snack, so, he will touch them if he can feed them to the chickens. He waters the plants, and knows that rain makes the garden grow. He is beginning to understand purpose.

Neither Brandi, or I claim to know everything, but, over the last year Brandi has become a horticulture wiz, a veterinarian, and many other things as well as the teacher to our children. She instills purpose in each and everything she does, touches, feels, and experiences. While, me, all I've done is learned to listen (sometimes), but, I've made an attempt to make this a business, for a purpose, not to get rich, but to make something to remember for our children.

As always, thank you for reading my blog, and supporting our family farm.
