Today started as most others, however, today we started at 530am, fired up the smoker, filled it with hickory, and at 6am threw a 15lb ham into it. Then began the morning chores, added onto the hogs run, watered the garden, fed the chickens.
Around 8 we woke the children, and had them go and pick the potato bugs off the potato plants. By 10, it was time to head inside and avoid the record setting heat that continues to hang over us, with no end in sight.
Egg production was down about a dozen, most likely again due to the heat, I'll be able to better figure out counts tomorrow, because it marks a week since we bought our new hens.
Other than feedings, and making sure all the animals had enough water, nothing else was done today, until 730, at that time we loaded the cornish hens and took them to our processor, which we will then pick up on Friday. The hens will be available for delivery or pick up on Saturday, for a fee of $16.50 each, and we have 10-12 available for purchase.
The unofficial start of Summer is now came and went, the heat is a sure reminder of that. Currently it is 1030 and my brother is now working on the air conditioning, after putting in a full days work. Hopefully within an hour it will be as good as new.
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend, and made the trip home safe.
As always, thank you for reading and supporting our family farm.
