If you live in the Kansas City surrounding area, today was brutal and tomorrow doesn't look to be any different. The farm hit its highest temperature of 97 around 2pm. When we left the house at 10am it was already 86, when we started feedings at 730 it was 81, I miss the days in May when the highs were around 75 maybe 80, and the spring months with highs in the 60s. This year we went from 30s to 80s in a matter of 3 days. Like they say; " If you don't like the weather in Kansas, stick around 10 minutes."Â
So today was our go to town day, we actually didn't get much accomplished, we saw a few friends, and made the mistake of going to the grocery store while hungry, and spent $60.00 in food that sounded delicious, which it will be, just wasn't necessary. Then we came home, and started working.Â
The hogs needed some more shelter from the unrelenting sun, so we move another shelter into their area, and the hens needed something to help cool them, so we cut a hole into the coop and framed in a fan, the difference in temperature was almost instant.
Other than that, not much else was accomplished. We cannot run the central air due to a problem we found with the unit itself, so our second level (the sleeping areas) is just above 85 degrees currently, we're hoping it drops into the lower 70s soon, using window units.Â
Not much more to write about today, our egg production was just at 3 dozen, mostly due to the heat. Our chickens hate the heat, and the rain. So Production this summer is questionable. We take the feeder hens to processing Tuesday am, and they will be ready Thursday, for anyone who wants to claim a few before their gone. We have 10 available for 16.50 each. Average weight is 7-9lbs.
As always, thanks for reading and supporting our family farm. Be safe if you are out and about this weekend, especially while traveling, or on the lake.
